A jaundiced view of life from the darkest recess of the saloon bar Friday, 24 August A mixed blessing This week has seen the thirtieth anniversary of the introduction of all-day opening for pubs, which came in on 22 August From the perspective of today, it seems hard to believe that pubs were required to close for two or three hours every afternoon. It was originally introduced by Lloyd George as an emergency measure during the First World War, but lingered on for over seventy years.
There were dire predictions of mayhem in the streets in the early evenings after people had been drinking for hours, but needless to say nothing of the kind occurred. For quite a few years, most stuck to the old pattern of opening. I remember it being well-nigh impossible to find anywhere open in central Manchester on a Saturday afternoon after 3 pm.

It could be described as a good introduction to the Dales, taking in some of the most easily accessible locations, and the most popular in Bolton Abbey, Grassington and Burnsall. Industries[ edit ] West Yorkshire grew up around several industries. Bradford , Halifax and Huddersfield were grown through the development of woollen mills, Leeds’ traditional industry was the manufacturing of cloth, while heavier engineering industries facilitated growth in South Leeds. The woollen and cloth industries declined throughout the twentieth century. Many of the coal mines in West Yorkshire closed during the Robens era in the s, but mining was still a significant employer in the Wakefield district at the time of the —85 strike.
Wakefield has also attracted many service based industries, inparticularly call centres. Two of the big four supermarkets are from West Yorkshire. Morrisons is based in Bradford, while Asda is based in Leeds. Netto have their British headquarters in South Elmsall. Rhubarb The Rhubarb Triangle is wholly in West Yorkshire and still produces the vegetable in considerable quantities. Twelve farmers who farm within the Rhubarb Triangle applied to have the name “Yorkshire forced rhubarb” added to the list of foods and drinks that have their names legally protected by the European Commission’s Protected Food Name scheme.
Food protected status accesses European funding to promote the product and legal backing against other products made outside the area using the name. Other protected names include Stilton cheese , Champagne and Parma Ham.

The remaining 11 units had been transferred to the Great Eastern Main Line region some years previously. Silverlink retained Northampton – London, with Central Trains taking over all local services between Birmingham and Northampton. Initially, Central Trains hired in several Class units from Silverlink to work their new services, but the arrival of the new Class “Desiro” units meant that very few Class units were then required.
These were not permitted north of Rugby due to lack of the National Radio Network system Eastern Region units only had the Cab Secure Radio System used for Driver Only Operated Passenger services and therefore could not be used on Central Trains services although they occasionally appeared on services to Rugby at weekends due to the line being closed between Rugby and Birmingham New Street.
This ceased in late with the introduction of Class trains on the Birmingham – Liverpool route. One of these sub-leased units was involved in a low-speed derailment at Watford Yard.

In the second map from the same collection I have hatched the buildings concerned to place them in a more general view of this part of Bradford in the years The creation of new thoroughfares, and extensive building redevelopment, results in a very different street pattern today. In this third image you may just be able to make out the design on the tavern sign. Neither drawing nor plans can be later than by which time the inn was no longer in existence, but it is likely that they are approximately contemporary.
These features are replicated in the plan, so there really can be little doubt that we are looking at a single building. Scruton says that at one time in front of this inn was a ring for bull-baiting, which presumably provided its name.

Young People in Hospitality: Catering and Hospitality as a Career schedule 21st November by Virtual College in Food and Drink Many young people work in hospitality, but there is a notable gulf between their perceptions of the sector and the potential career opportunities which it offers. This may be understandable to an extent, for many youngsters will take on such jobs as part-time or weekend work, perhaps while at school or college.
At this point, their ambitions will be directed elsewhere, and their work will simply be a means to an end of earning some money in the here and now. However, this can lead to a deeper misconception that this is all hospitality is about – that any role in the sector will only be a job and not part of a long-term career. A myriad of misconceptions This common view was highlighted by the UK Hospitality Workforce Commission report, published in September It reported the anecdotal evidence supplied by its Youth UK ambassador, Courtney Avery, about the negative perception of hospitality and catering among the young.
The prevailing image was of a sector in which both skill levels and pay are low, making it a poor prospect for a long-term career choice. Others simply see it as dull and lacking in variety. In fact, there are ample opportunities for careers to develop. The report cites the example of Whitbread, one of the firms that has pressed for the potential opportunities to be highlighted more.
A quarter of its managers started out as apprentices, demonstrating that it is eminently possible to begin at a low level and rise up through the ranks.
